Guidelines for Supervision (S-Factor) Assignments

Types of S-factor courses
- Thesis/Project
COE Practice – The Dean will give approval for faculty thesis chairs to receive workload credit for thesis (5990/5995 courses) as deemed appropriate by the Division Chair.
Division Considerations: Division Chairs are responsible for monitoring the number of theses recommended for approval within the division based on budget and needs for course scheduling. Division Offices are responsible for coordinating unit banking process with College Resource Manager.
- Fieldwork Supervision (undergraduate and graduate)
COE Practice – The dean will give approval for faculty to receive workload credit for fieldwork supervision as deemed appropriate by the Division Chair. (Note: Prior approval is obtained via course scheduling worksheet and workload forms submitted by division office.)
Division Considerations: Division Chairs/Offices are responsible for fieldwork eligibility, enrollments, supervision assignments and reconciliation deadlines. Lecturers can be hired as instructor of record when the number of eligible fieldwork students exceeds the pre-approved supervised workload for tenured and probationary faculty. Lecturers must be compensated as part of their regular load and may not bank units.
- Independent Study (undergraduate and graduate)
COE Practice – Requests for faculty to receive workload credit for Independent Study courses will be considered on a case by case basis. (Note: Prior approval is obtained via course scheduling worksheet and workload forms submitted by division office.)
Division Considerations: In the event that a Division Chair needs to cancel a low enrolled course, has exhausted other course alternatives and is compelled to provide those students with an independent study option for completion, the chair should consult with the Dean to obtain prior approval and with approval may offer independent study workload credit to a tenure track faculty or lecturer. Lecturers must be compensated as part of their regular load and may not bank units.
