Dr. Timothy Steele, Professor Emeritus and President's Distinguished Professor at Cal State LA, will deliver the David L. Kubal Memorial Lecture on Wednesday, March 15, 2017 in the Golden Eagle Ballroom (map to this event). The lecture is free and open to the public. Doors will open at 5:30pm, and refreshments will be served. There may be a nominal fee for campus parking.
Timothy Steele is the author of four collections of poems: Uncertainties and Rest (1979), Sapphics against Anger and Other Poems (1986), The Color Wheel (1994), and Toward the Winter Solstice (2006). The first two were reprinted in 1995 as a joint volume, Sapphics and Uncertainties: Poems 1970-1986. He has also published two widely discussed books of literary history and criticism, Missing Measures: Modern Poetry and the Revolt against Meter (1990) and All the Fun's in How You Say a Thing: An Explanation of Meter and Versification (1999); and he has edited The Poems of J.V. Cunningham (1997).
Steele’s honors include a Wallace Stegner Fellowship in Creative Writing from Stanford University, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Peter I. B. Lavan Younger Poets Award from the Academy of American Poets, the Los Angeles PEN Center's Literary Award for Poetry, a California Arts Council Grant, a Commonwealth Club Medal for Poetry, and the Robert Fitzgerald Award for Excellence in the Study of Prosody. He is an emeritus professor of English here at California State University, Los Angeles, where he taught from 1987 to 2012. He was named an Outstanding Professor at Cal State LA in 1997-1998, and was named the President's Distinguished Professor in 1998-1999.
The David L. Kubal Memorial Lecture is an annual lecture sponsored by the Cal State LA Department of English.
