On October 23 from 3 PM - 4 PM Dr. Patrick Sharp, Liberal Studies professor, will present Angels & Amazons: The First Women of Sci-Fi
A common myth about science fiction is that women did not make major contributions to the genre until the 1960s. In this presentation, Dr. Sharp shows how this myth is ridiculously inaccurate through his analysis of work by women who were well-know pulp authors in the 1920s and 1930s, how their work provided a critique of scientific masculinity and carved out a space for women in the genre, and discuss why these women were forgotten for over a half-century.
