Thank You to ECST 2020 Donors!
During calendar year 2020, ECST was fortunate to receive over $1.13 million in philanthropic gifts from alumni, friends, foundations, and corporations.
Said ECST Dean Emily Allen: “Mr. Kim is truly an accomplished businessman and philanthropist. On behalf of the entire college, I thank him for his generosity and for helping students fulfill their dreams of a college degree. His support will truly make a difference in our students’ lives.”
Mr. Kim is a distinguished entrepreneur, author, and philanthropist. After earning his undergraduate degree from Sogang University in Seoul, South Korea, he immigrated to the United States in 1976 at the age of 27. He subsequently worked his way through graduate school, earning his master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Cal State LA in 1979. Mr. Kim went on to launch two successful startups, Fibermux, a fiber optics company, and Xylan, a network switch company, and was able to reward early investors when both companies were sold.
In 2000, Mr. Kim established the Steve Y. Kim Foundation in Los Angeles. After 30 years of living in the United States, he returned to South Korea in 2007, wrote several books, gave lectures worldwide to young people and business leaders, and launched the Dream Hope Future Leadership Center in 2009.
In 2016, Mr. Kim purchased the Sand Canyon Country Club in Santa Clarita and returned to the United States. Kim now lives in Los Angeles and has a passion for golf, community, and supporting young people all over the world.
A special shout-out also goes to The Sikand Foundation for its support of ECST faculty and student research through the family foundation’s pledged gift to the Sikand Center for Sustainable and InTelligent Infrastructure (the SITI-Center).
We would also like to thank alumnus Allen Holliday (BSE ‘63) and spouse Dr. Mary Mogge for their new gift to support our Summer Transition to ECST Program (STEP). Mr. Holliday worked as a Senior Principal Software Engineer at Raytheon and was a lecturer at Cal State Fullerton. Dr. Mogge is Professor Emerita, Department of Physics and Astronomy at Cal Poly Pomona. Together, their gift to STEP helped support additional student peer instructors for our incoming freshmen during summer 2020. Their gift was especially impactful for students because of the unusual circumstances created by the pandemic and the challenges created by remote instruction.
The figures below are overviews of the sources of gifts and how they are being used. Gifts given to the Acceleration Initiative are used for a variety of programs such as MESA, LAunchPad, STEP, FYrE, and peer mentor support. General support gifts are used for a wide variety of activities including student travel, professional development, and remote laboratory kits.
