About the RSC

Use of radioactive materials at Cal State LA is permitted by the State of California Department of Public Health (CDPH), Radiologic Health Branch through the issuance of a Broad Scope License. Member of this associated committee, and applicable regulatory state and federal regulations define the parameters under which radioactive materials can be used at Cal State LA. Maintaining a broad scope license allows Cal State LA to make changes to the program under the direct oversight of the RSC without having to apply for license amendments with the State for each change in the program.

In this sense, the RSC acts as the State’s immediate oversight authority on campus. The use of radiation-producing machines is also regulated by the State of California through permitting, the licensing of users, and the inspection of registered facilities. In order to maintain the broad-scope license, Cal State LA is required to establish a Radiation Safety Committee and a Radiation Safety to establish a radiation safety program. The purpose of the radiation safety program is to ensure that work with sources of ionizing radiation is conducted in such a manner as to protect the health, minimize risk to life and property, and keep radiation exposures as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA). To meet these requirements, the president of Cal State LA authorizes the establishment of a Radiation Safety Program to regulate the safe use of ionizing radiation from any source and for any purpose at Cal State LA and in associated locations that fall under the Cal State LA’s licensure jurisdiction.
