Benjamin L. Lee

Benjamin Lee, Ph.D.

Dr. Benjamin Lee is a Professor in the Department of Technology at California State University, Los Angeles. He also is a Chair Professor of Wuhan University in China, a Fellow of Institute of Print-Media Professionals (IPP) in Hong Kong, and an IDEAL Scholar of Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET).

He earned his doctorate at University of Northern Iowa. He worked in the printing and publishing industry as a managing director and a manager for eight years and taught at Central Michigan University and Eastern Michigan University for five years before he began teaching at California State University, Los Angeles. He has been certified by Association of Management and Applied Engineering (ATMAE) Technology as a Certified Senior Technology Manager.

He is interested in the research of new media applications, micro communications, and creative media, such as On-Line Media-On-Demand and Distributed Training as well as the relationships between new media technology and user habits.

• Led College Assessment Task Force and Department Chairs on continuing implementation of student outcomes and assessment initiatives, implemented suggestions from ABET accreditation team and program review, assessment of graduate programs, and prepared for 2006 ABET Accreditation.
• Assisted the Dean to plan college resources and managed 7.3 million dollars college annual budget.
• Increased the enrollment for the college from Fall, 2005 to Fall 2007 by 19%.
• Reduced the Cost per FTES for the college from Fall, 2005 to 2007 by 16%.
• Lead the grant from the California Air Resources Board for building a hydrogen fueling station on campus for our Power, Energy, and Transportation program. 
• Supervised College Resource Manager, Information Technology Director and Consultants, MESA Engineering Program Director, MESA School Program Director, Technical Administrator and Staff, Outreach Coordinator, and all college staff.
• Managed college curriculum developments, course scheduling, and enrollment.

• Developed and implemented the new B.S. in Graphic Communications Degree Program with Management, Marketing/Sales, Digital Imaging and Document Management Options and 19 new graphic communications courses based on the future of media and graphic communications.
• Designed and initiated the new Graphic Communications/Digital Imaging/Media Lab, which includes digital imaging, printing, electronic publishing, e-commerce, PDF workflow, and cross-media production. Standardized the operation procedures for each piece of equipment and authored Graphic Communications/Media Lab Executive Overview for visitors and Graphic Communications/Media Lab Manual for instructors and students.
• Increased the enrollment for this program from Fall, 1997 to Fall, 2004 by 395%.
• Developed the 2+4+Career Model and initiated this program to arrange for 25 senior students, annually, from Inner-City Graphic Communications Academy to take one Graphic Communications course each quarter through the CSULA’s ACE/PACE program. This program not only provides GC Academy senior students the college experience but also motivates more than 10 students annual to continue their graphic communications education at CSULA.
• Served as the program assessment coordinator for the Graphic Communications program assessment and program review, provided educational objectives & program outcomes, conducted surveys, analyzed assessment results, and implemented results into program modification.
• Developed online graphic communications courses for non-traditional students.
• Directed and led students to compete, with one of them won the National first place award in “Call for Technical Papers” national contest, sponsored by the Research and Engineering Council of the Graphic Arts Industry, Inc.
• Served as the advisor for the Graphic Communications program, directed students regarding their course schedules, graduation checks, and other issues.
• Served as a graduate thesis advisor, directed graduate and undergraduate directed study projects, and supervised cooperative education projects.
• Continued to promote 2+2 and 2+2+2 articulation programs, established articulation contracts with Pasadena City College, Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, Don Bosco College, and Fullerton College, made presentations to junior college and high school printing major students about future graphic communications technology and 2+2 articulation program, and assisted junior colleges and high schools to recruit students for their graphic communications programs. Promoted the concept of 2+2+2 articulation program and helps high school teachers to up-grade their graphic communications programs.
• Initiated the Graphic Communications Club and served as the faculty advisor for this club.
• Built relationships with Printing Industries Association, Inc. of Southern California (PIASC) and major national printing/graphic communications foundations. Helped students to acquire fellowships and scholarships from Graphic Arts Technical Foundation, Research and Engineering Council of the Graphic Arts Industry, Inc. and Technical Association of the Graphic Arts.

I developed a 2+4+Career program to arrange for 25 senior students, annually, from Inner-City Graphic Communications Academy, to take one Graphic Communications course each quarter through the CSULA’s ACE/PACE program. This program not only provides GC Academy senior students with university experience but also motivates more than ten students annually to continue their university education at  CSULA.
