INTRODUCTION
Dr. Jamie Marsh is Associate Professor of Literacy Education in the Division of Curriculum and Instruction. She teaches literacy courses in the Multiple Subject Teaching Credential program and M.A. in Education for Social Change, Option in Literacy Leadership program.
Dr. Marsh earned her Ph.D. in Education from University of Virginia where she was a researcher on Jane Hansen’s Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) Research Project. Using qualitative research methods, Dr. Marsh studies students as writers in culturally and linguistically diverse K-12 classroom settings. Her research explores the sociocultural influences that enable students as writers and the ways in which students’ experiences as writers transform their identities.
An educator for over 20 years, Dr. Marsh has taught elementary, middle, and high school English language arts and reading in California and Texas and served in various K-12 school and district literacy leadership roles. She used research from her own classroom to co-author the book Getting Started: The Reading-Writing Workshop, Grades 4-8 (Heinemann, 2007). Dr. Marsh continues to research, write, and lead professional development for K-12 teachers and school leaders. She coaches teachers as they implement literacy instruction in their classrooms, and she helps school leaders create systems and structures to support litercy instruction at both the school and district levels.
Dr. Marsh is passionate about providing all children and youth with the conditions they need in order to grow and flourish as readers and writers. And she is passionate about providing all teachers with the professional learning experiences they deserve in order to meet the diverse needs of their students, particularly those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
