The Bilingual Child Language Laboratory is headed by Dr. Simon-Cereijido. Her research has focused on the characteristics of language disorders in bilingual Spanish-English children, validity of clinical identification measures for this population, and efficacy studies evaluating the effect of language intervention in young bilingual children. As part of this work, she has studied the identification accuracy of a variety of grammatical markers in English and Spanish (use of arguments, ditransitive sentences, morphological accuracy), of tasks (cloze tasks, sentence repetition tasks, narrative samples), and of phonological memory measures such as nonword repetition. Findings from these studies have been published in peer-reviewed journals. She has also presented her work at national and international conferences and was invited to present at academic and professional training programs such as Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) LEND (Leadership Education in Developmental Disabilities) program, University of Southern California (USC) University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD), Pennsylvania Office of Child Development and Early Learning, the Universidad de Querétaro, Mexico, and the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC), Barcelona, Spain.
In addition to her research in communication disorders in dual language learners, Dr. Simon-Cereijido has extensive clinical experience. She has supervised graduate students, teachers, and clinical fellows in New York, San Diego, and Los Angeles. She is aware of the challenges encountered by clinicians and families and the strengths that children, families, clinicians, and teachers bring to the clinical setting.
Dr. Simon-Cereijido is a co-author of a language intervention book for bilingual children with language disorders, and has been invited to present professional workshops locally (Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, Region 10 Coordinating Council, Speech & Language Pathologists’s Subcommittee Conference), at other states (Oregon Speech-Language Hearing Association Conference, Pennsylvania Office of Child Development and Early Learning), and nationally (ASHA School Conference, ASHA 2015 Convention Cultural and Linguistic Considerations Across the Discipline).
