The Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics accredits dietetics education programs. Similar to other healthcare professions, the Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) credential is not earned upon graduation with a degree. Graduates who complete the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Nutritional Science Online Program at Cal State LA are eligible to apply to an ACEND-accredited supervised practice program (dietetic internship).
After completing an accredited supervised practice program, and earning an MS degree in nutrition (or another field), you will be eligible to sit for the National Registration Examination for Dieticians administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). Those who pass the exam will earn the designation of Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN). In California, RDNs do not need to obtain state licensure, but most other states also require this. The CDR provides general guidance on licensure.
There are three steps to becoming a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist:
- Complete the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Nutritional Science Online Program at Cal State LA (for those who did not complete an ACEND-accredited degree program in nutrition). You will be issued a verification statement of completion once you complete the program requirements.
- Apply, be accepted, and complete an ACEND-accredited supervised practice program.
During a supervised practice program, typically called Dietetic Internship (DI) prospective interns must apply, be accepted, and complete at least 1,000 hours of supervised practice. Competition is fierce for acceptance DIs.
Applications for internships historically occur twice a year: fall and spring. Students typically apply during spring to be able to start their internship the following fall.
Fees for internships vary and are separate from the fees for the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Nutritional Science Online Program. Dietetic internships range in cost. Please research each program of interest to learn more about specific fees or tuition.
Various types of internship programs include:
- Traditional face-to-face programs
- Traditional face-to-face supervised practice programs are limited. Students may need to relocate.
- Distance programs
- Interns can stay in Los Angeles but may need to find their locations, which can be difficult, especially for clinical locations. Some distance programs do find sites for their interns.
- This option is available to current employees of this WIC organization. Students often secure jobs with WIC after receiving their verification statement, gaining working experience, and then applying/completing their supervised practice program through PHFE-WIC.
- Combined Master's Degree/Dietetic Internship (MS/DI) and Coordinated Programs (CP).
- Graduate programs GPs, which include experiential learning.
- Information about the various Dietetic internships
- Pass the RDN Exam
The Registration Exam is administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) for those who have completed the first two steps. There is excellent information available on the CDR website.
