April 6, 1998 04/06/98 CONTACT:Margie Yu,Public Affairs Asst.(323) 343-3047 Calendarof Events Distinguished Poet Laureate Will Read at Cal State L.A.'s Poetry Series What & Who:Cal State L.A. will present a reading by poet Donald Hall--one of the most distinguished and influential poets writing in America today--at the University's 13th Annual Jean Burden Poetry Reading, a series established in 1986 to honor Jean Burden for her influence as a poet, essayist, anthologist, teacher and editor, and for her long-standing support of poetry on the Cal State L.A. campus. When:Wednesday, May 6, 1998, 7 p.m. Where:Cal State L.A. Music Hall. The University is located at the Eastern Avenue exit, San Bernardino (I-10) Freeway, at the interchange of the 10 and 710 Freeways. Public (permit dispensers) parking is available in Lot C, Lot G, or the top level of North Parking Structure II. More:Poet Laureate of New Hampshire, Donald Hall is author of fourteen books of poems, four plays and twenty-two prose volumes, and has studied with such twentieth century masters as Robert Frost, T.S. Eliot, Dylan Thomas, Yvor Winters and Ezra Pound. Hall's work has won numerous awards, including the 1989 Los Angeles Times Book Prize in Poetry for The One Day, the 1990 Frost Medal from the Poetry Society of America for Old and New Poems, and the 1994 Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize from the American Council for the Arts. This impressive string of awards began in 1955 with the selection of his book Exiles and Marriages for the Lamont Poetry Prize. As an anthologist, he edited with Robert Pack The New Poets of England and America that became the touchstone anthology for many poets and readers coming of age in the late 1950s and early 1960s.
