Dean’s Message
As you read this, you are probably moving from a slower pace suited for summer into that faster pace that gets an academic year started. I sincerely hope that your summer was filled with many good things---a time for enjoyment, opportunities to refresh yourself, and memories made with family and friends. I also hope you are looking forward to this academic year and the opportunities to grow personally and professionally through connecting with and working with others in the CCOE, across campus, and out in our local communities where fieldwork and service happen. This fall, the college takes an important step to posthumously honor a distinguished alumni and history maker, Mr. Sal Castro. After receiving his training as an educator, in the early 60s, in the College of Education at LA State College (which today is the CCOE at Cal State LA), he found himself teaching in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). In 1968, he, along with the youth leaders with whom he worked, led walkouts from five area high schools by Latinx students and supporters (about 25,000 strong) to call attention to the discrimination and poor schooling they were experiencing. This changed the course of history. One result, more and more Latinx students went to college in that period, a legacy which continues to this day. Your success is important to us! We are here to prepare you to you to think, to learn, to teach, to lead, and to respond to the needs of your communities and schools! Please let us know how we can assist in your goals and studies as you prepare to meet the needs of the children, youth, and families of Los Angeles!
I hope you have a richly rewarding semester!
Disability rights champion urges Cal State LA graduates to fight for justice
Haben Girma, a disability rights advocate and the first deafblind graduate of Harvard Law School, encouraged students in Cal State LA’s Class of 2019 to break down barriers and fight for justice. Girma, a champion for equal opportunities for people with disabilities, delivered an uplifting keynote address on Monday during the Commencement ceremony for the Charter College of Education at Cal State LA. “You’ve developed many skills and talents over the years. Please use your skills to remove barriers. Even if it’s a small barrier, it will make a huge impact for other students, teachers and everyone else who’s struggling,” Girma told hundreds of students who filled the rows of seats at the May 20 afternoon ceremony in the University Gymnasium. “Inclusion is a choice. The barriers won’t dismantle until we take the steps to remove them—and I hope you’ll all join me in making our world more accessible.”

Jenny Chow Chiappe Commencement Success Story 2019
Jenny Chow Chiappe likens pursuing a doctoral degree to running an ultramarathon. These races, which are even longer than a marathon, test your endurance, resilience and determination—similar to weathering the grueling years leading up to a Ph.D. Chiappe, a 34-year-old Lincoln Heights resident, once ran a 50-miler in the mountains of Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah. She had to navigate the route with only tags on trees marking the terrain. Her body fatigued. The end, at times, was nowhere in sight. “Of course, you are anxiety-filled,” she recalls. “You don’t see the finish line until you get closer and closer and when you finish, it doesn’t really feel real. When you do cross, you’re delirious. I think that’s how I’m going to feel when I graduate.” Chiappe will culminate her educational journey on May 20. She will graduate with a 3.9 GPA and a Doctor of Philosophy in Special Education. The degree is offered through the Cal State LA Charter College of Education/UCLA Joint Doctoral Program.

Dean’s Message
Here we are at the start of Spring Semester 2019! Welcome back to your academic pursuits!
With the historic LAUSD strike unfolding before us, we find ourselves faced with an interesting context for the field of education in Los Angeles and beyond. Alia Wong, who interviewed striking teachers for her feature in The Atlantic (January 14, 2019) said, “…when asked how their own background may have informed their take on the strike, almost every LAUSD teacher I interviewed used the word “personal”.”
I have come to know that the CCOE commitment to educator preparation is also enlivened by the personal commitment of our faculty, staff, and administrative team. It is so enriching to see how that personal commitment leads to the compassionate and high-quality training that prepares our students to become exceptional and caring educators – counselors, teachers, and educational leaders – committed to inclusivity, student success, and the value of all individuals in our communities. That is something worth fighting for, and something we are seeing demonstrated on the streets of Los Angeles right now as educators take part in what for many will be the most important civic engagement of their lives!
So my hope for you in our academic arena this spring is that you remember to make all of your efforts personal. By doing so, you will enhance your personal, intellectual and professional development!
Warmly,
Dean Cheryl L. Ney

Alumna highlighted by Lady Gaga's foundation
Alumna and Charter College of Education graduate student Roxana Preciado shared her story with Lady Gaga's Born This Way Foundation. In the foundation's video, she talks of being kicked out of the house at 16 after coming out as gay and experiencing homelessness. She shares her journey of starting her own family and achieving her educational goals. "Just keep fighting and don't believe people when they tell you, you can't," Preciado says in the video. "Because I have heard 'you can't,' my entire life, and I did, and you can too." Preciado received a bachelor's degree from Cal State LA in rehabilitation studies and is pursuing a master's degree in counseling.

Alumna's school unveils Nipsey Hussle memorial basketball court
Cal State LA alumna Hattie Mitchell's school in South Los Angeles unveiled a memorial basketball court in honor of rapper and businessman Nipsey Hussle. Hussle was shot and killed on March 31 outside his clothing store in Hyde Park. The school, Crete Academy, worked with Veniceball, a community organization in Venice, to create the court, which is adorned with a painted mural of Hussle by artist Gustavo Zermeno Jr. "For our kids to look at Nipsey and to see everything he's done, what he was able to accomplish and how much he gave back to the community is huge for them ... because he looks like them. He grew up where they grew up. He's the epitome of everything that they want to be and aspire to be," Mitchell told CBS Los Angeles. Mitchell, who founded Crete Academy in 2017, received a bachelor's degree from the Urban Learning Program in Cal State LA's Charter College of Education.
