Admissions and Recruitment (A&R) made recruitment presentations to African American cultural programs, clubs and organizations at the following community and school sites:

Admissions and Recruitment tracked and remained in contact with approximately 2,400 African American freshmen and transfer students who submitted applications to remind them of upcoming deadlines, ECDS, and Orientation.
Comprehensive Review—A holistic admissions review was offered to freshman applicants who otherwise were not offered regular admissions to the university.
Approximately 64% of all Black freshmen who applied were admitted for fall 2020.
Approximately 83% of all Black freshmen who applied were admitted for fall 2021.
Approximately 53% of all Black freshmen who applied were admitted for fall 2020.
Approximately 66% of all Black freshmen who applied were admitted for fall 2021.
The Halisi Scholars Living Learning Community (HSLLC) enhances the residential experience for students interested in history, culture, and perspectives of the Black community. The HSLLC offers connections with faculty and peers as well as engagement opportunities that focus on academic success, cultural awareness, and civic engagement.
The RISE Peer Mentoring Program (Retention through Interpersonal Student Engagement) pairs continuing students with new students to help them successfully settle into their home away from home. RISE aims to positively impact the experience of Black students and their allies at Cal State LA, who are either first-time freshmen or transfer students during their first year. 2019 activities included: Monthly meetings for mentors and mentees; Black staff and faculty introductions; Off-campus trips (Escape Room in DTLA; mentor training at Disneyland), and Registration Mixers – informal gatherings where students can identify classes they can enroll in alongside other RISE members.

The mission of the Men of Color Success Network (MOCSN) is to support and empower undergraduate Black and other men of color by providing programs and services that promote opportunities for identity development, brotherhood, leadership, holistic well-being, retention, and carwer development.
Undergraduate Studies and the Office of the Vice President for EDI are identifying and implementing retention strategies to facilitate the academic success of Blacks and other undergraduate Men of Color.
New incoming Black students meet to connect with each other and current Black students to explore campus resources and opportunities, including: Clubs and organizations with a focus on Black students/community; Peer Mentoring; Academic Support; and other events and activities geared towards Black students/Black experiences at Cal State LA.
Provides an inclusive and friendly space that allows students to be themselves. Access to Library including books, journals, magazines, and website listings; Cross-cultural video and audio library; Computers; Support groups and workshops; Study space; Meeting space; Message boxes for affiliated clubs and organizations; Information on community organizations, job opportunities, and scholarships; Microwaves and refrigerators; Media center for educational purposes; Friendly staff and volunteers to answer questions and discuss ideas.

Black Alumni Network to grow, sustain, and promote a thriving community of Black students at Cal State LA, a premier comprehensive public university in Los Angeles. It is the energy, hard work, and passion of our students that inspires us to support and mentor our future alumni. As alumni, we value supporting students in higher education to continue with their personal and professional development. The Black Alumni Network exists to establish formal provisions to create opportunities that elevate our community through increased visibility, constructive programming, charitable initiatives, and fostered connections.
