About the Program
Graduates of the Industrial Technology program are called "technologists" to distinguish them from graduates of engineering programs. Technologists apply management theory and practice with technical skills to solve problems.
Technology changes at the speed of light. What was innovative yesterday may be replaced tomorrow. A variety of businesses and industries are in need of individuals who have the knowledge and flexibility to learn, implement, and manage new technology within complex business environments. Schools need well-prepared industrial and technology education teachers to help educate and guide young men and women into high-technology careers.
On the business and industry side, Industrial Technology (ITEC) majors assume roles as "Industrial Technologists" in a wide variety of industrial and business settings, and they understand managerial concepts and principles. Common to all Industrial Technologists is the focus on continuous improvement in the areas of productivity and quality.
Students majoring in Industrial Technology choose one of three concentration areas of study from a selection that includes Manufacturing Systems and Processes, Sustainable Power and Transportation Technologies, and Operations and Supply Chain Management. Students who take approved 15 units of operations and supply chain management courses qualify for a minor in Operations and Supply Chain Management.
Each of these concentrations of study within the major prepares you so that you can contribute almost immediately as an Industrial Technologist, a person who applies and manages technology in today's high-tech environment.
Notice to BS Industrial Technology (ITEC) Students
The BS Industrial Technology degree program will be replaced by the new BS Engineering Technology degree program, which will begin admitting students in Fall 2022. Current Industrial Technology students will be able to finish their ITEC degree over the next several years or switch to a new Major if they qualify. Students should speak to an adviser to discuss their options.
The BS Industrial Technology degree has been accredited by the Association of Technology Management and Applied Engineering (ATMAE) up until November 1, 2020. The Technology Department has decided not to continue with ATMAE accreditation activities, and the program’s ATMAE accreditation status will end on November 1, 2020. The effect of this change in accreditation status on students is expected to be negligible.
The Engineering Technology program will seek ABET Accreditation as soon as possible. Our engineering and computer science programs have been ABET-accredited for many decades; ABET is the worldwide leader in accrediting academic technical programs. The change in degree program and accreditation status is expected to benefit students by providing stronger recognition from industry and more rigorous standards.
