Department Mission
The mission of the Natural Science Program is to provide broad training across the natural science disciplines for students seeking interdisciplinary and applied science careers for which a broad science background is useful.
Program Learning Outcomes
1. Knowledge. Students will acquire knowledge and demonstrate understanding of the core concepts, principles, and processes across the fields of biology, chemistry, earth science, physics, and space science.
2. Proficiency. Students will be able to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use the needed information for a wide range of purposes, and do so ethically and legally.
3. Application. Students will learn the critical thinking skills necessary to apply the scientific method and develop problem-solving skills. This includes:
-
Applying scientific inquiry and hypothesis building strategy
-
Locating, evaluating and organizing appropriate data in table and graphical form
-
Designing and conducting investigative experiments
-
Applying quantitative reasoning skills to answer scientific questions
-
Possessing the ability to speak and write effectively
-
Demonstrating the ability to work collaboratively
4. Analysis. Students will synthesize knowledge, use quantitative reasoning and data to address issues surrounding environmental issues and natural hazards in their local community and on a global scale.
5. Evaluation. Students will be able to describe and compare the physical and biological characteristics of local environments like the Los Angeles River system and will evaluate how historical development and adverse human impacts contribute to its present status.
6. Transformation. Students will be able to use their intellectual skills to devise and develop solutions to environmental problems in their communities, and will understand that they have a social responsibility to apply fact-based science to situations relevant to everyday life in areas such as education, human health, the natural environment, technological advances and policy.
