Promoting Active Learning Strategies through the Flipped Classroom Model in STEM Gateway Courses

Flipped Classroom

This joint project of three California State University (CSU) institutions—San José State University (SJSU), CSU-Los Angeles (CSULA), and Cal Poly Pomona (CPP) aims at improving the retention rates of students in gateway STEM courses. With 23 campuses, 460,000 students, and 47,000 faculty and staff, the CSU is the largest and most diverse university systems in the country. All three CSUs are accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and many different programs are accredited by program-specific accrediting agencies.

This project builds upon the collaborative environment in the CSU by engaging faculty from three different campuses in a rigorous evaluation of pedagogy in STEM education. This project incorporates a flipped classroom approach to determine if the teaching style is effective at decreasing failure rates of students in the “gateway” STEM courses at these three CSUs.

Through the project, a multi-campus faculty learning community will be developed to drive the curricular and instructional innovation to increasing student learning, academic success, and retention in seven critical freshman and sophomore level gateway STEM classes.
