The Cal State LA Math and Science Teacher Initiative (MSTI) program is funded by the California State University (CSU). MSTI is an innovative collaboration between the CSU Chancellor’s Office, Cal State LA College of Natural and Social Sciences (NSS), and Cal State LA Charter College of Education (CCOE). The program was established to increase the number and diversity of highly qualified math and science teachers to address the critical shortage of credentialed teachers in California. In 2018 a STEM component was added to increase the number of Computer Science and Technology teachers.
MSTI is for students who have a passion for math or science and a desire to make a difference in our youth. If this sounds like you, then a teaching career may be for you. A substantial number of students who enter CSULA’s math and science credential program come from CSULA’s undergraduate program, transfer students from local community colleges, and recent graduates from area high schools.
In response to the critical shortage of qualified math and science teachers in California, MSTI is committed to increasing the number and diversity of credentialed teachers; therefore, the main objectives are:
- to recruit outstanding candidates from Cal State LA undergraduate programs, local community colleges, and area high schools,
- to provide a clear pathway to assist students to complete general education requirements, major coursework, and CCOE credential program,
- and to offer financial support through stipends, reimbursement of certain credential related fees, e.g. EdTPA, CSET fees.
What does MSTI have to offer?
MSTI is committed to helping students achieve their goal of becoming a math or science educator by offering the following support systems:
Pathway – connecting students with appropriate advisors, resources, and potential school districts; and offering multiple roadmaps to becoming a credentialed math or science teacher
Financial assistance – providing monetary support with stipends and reimbursement of pertinent fees.
Early Field Experience – offering classroom placement to help students fulfill required observational hours and to provide students with authentic learning experiences
Preparation – presenting opportunities for students to gain math and science content knowledge, pedagogy, and best practices to ensure a successful career in education.
