Registration & Enrollment

Class Enrollment begins with a scheduled Enrollment Appointment. Your appointment date and time is displayed in the Student Center. Please refer to the Dates and Deadlines webpage for registration start dates and deadlines.

Access GET from the MyCalStateLA Portal.

You will be assigned a specific day and time when you may begin enrolling. Enrollment Appointment times are assigned randomly throughout the day based on your academic level and units earned. The time assigned to you is fixed and not subject to change for any reason. Hint: In GET, use the change term button to select the correct term when looking for your Enrollment Appointment.

Enrolling is a 6-step process

  1. Resolve holds
  2. Plan your Degree for a timely Graduation
  3. Plan your Class Schedule ahead of time with Schedule Planner
  4. Prepayment of tuition and fees is not required for enrollment. Please visit the One-Stop Financial Services website for payment information and deadlines.
  5. Obtain permissions for classes as needed
  6. Enroll in classes during your Appointment day/time

Additional Enrollment information

Add / Drop

Students use the GET Student Center to add and drop courses from their initial registration appointment time until the eleventh business day of the semester. The add/drop deadline varies for intersessions, summer term, and other special sessions. Please refer to the Dates & Deadlines page for specific deadlines.

Classes dropped during this period will not appear on the student’s transcript.

Late Add

Students use the Late Add Request form to add a class after the add deadline and before the fifteenth business day of the semester (census). The census date varies for intersessions, summer term, and other special sessions. Please refer to the Dates & Deadlines page for specific census dates.

A Late Add request requires payment of a $25 late submission fee and signatures from both the class instructor and the chair of the department offering the class.

Students use the Petition to Add Class after Census, available on the Registrar Forms page, only in cases of a documented technical error on the part of the University.

Withdrawal

Students use the Withdrawal Petition to drop classes between the add/drop deadline and the 80% point within the term. Please refer to the class schedule for these specific dates as they may vary. A withdrawal is included on the student’s transcript with a W grade. Undergraduate students are limited to 18 semester units of withdrawals for their entire undergraduate career.

Late Withdrawal

Students use the Withdrawal Petition and Addendum to drop classes during the last 20% of a term. Please refer to the class schedule for these specific dates as they may vary. A late withdrawal is included on the student’s transcript with a “W” grade. Undergraduate students are limited to 18 semester units of withdrawals for their entire undergraduate career.

Students are not permitted to withdraw after the end of a term.

Fees

Changes to enrollment (add, drop, and withdrawal) occurring after the start of the term are assessed a pro-rata charge (reduced refund). The One-Stop Financial Services website offers information regarding refunds.

All students can view their official enrollment in GET. Students are responsible for bringing any enrollment discrepancies to the attention of the Records Office, located at the Records Office, SSB 1st Floor (Admissions and Records Center). If a student is enrolled in a course section that he/she thought they had dropped or don't remember registering in, that student must obtain a drop request form with the signed approval of the instructor, department chair, and possibly the school dean(s) in order to have the course officially dropped from their record. The student is the only individual responsible for the enrollment record, and shouldn't assume that they will be dropped for non-attendance.

CSU Fully Online Courses
The CSU Fully Online Courses program (formely known as "CourseMatch") provides an opportunity for eligible fully matriculated CSU students to enroll in one fully-online course per term offered by another CSU campus. The program is aimed to facilitate access to high-demand, high success courses as part of the continuing effort of providing students with access to the courses needed to expedite graduation. If you are ready to enroll in a CSU Fully Online Course, please visit your MyCalStateLA portal and select the "Enroll in CSU Fully Online" link. Please note that CSU Fully Online Enrollment is typically available two weeks prior to the start of the term.

Students from other institutions taking a Fully Online course offered through CalState LA may find additional information on our CSU Fully Online Courses Welcome page.

Cal State L.A. uses waitlists in the enrollment process to help students register for the classes they need. Please refer to the Waitlists page for more information.

Undergraduate students:

  • May enroll in up to 18 units per semester
  • May waitlist up to 9 units at a time
  • Waitlisted units are included in the overall term limit
  • Full-time enrollment status requires enrollment in 12 units for the semester, however, 15 units is recommended for timely graduation

Graduate students:

  • May enroll in up to 16 units per semester
  • May waitlist up to 9 units at a time
  • Waitlisted units are included in the overall term limit
  • Graduate courses in the 5000 and 6000 number sequences are no longer weighted (x1.5) when calculating enrollment status (e.g. full-time, half-time, etc.)
  • Full-time enrollment status requires enrollment in 8 units for the semester

California Education Code Section 66025.81 requires CSU campuses to grant enrollment priority for student parents. It further clarifies that a “student parent” means a student who has a child or children under 18 years of age who will receive more than half of their support from that student.

Cal State LA operates a priority registration program offering numerous groups, including student parents, an opportunity to enroll before other students not receiving such entitlements. Student parents are granted enrollment priority along with other similar programs by being provided enrollment appointments earlier than other students in their same academic level (e.g., doctoral, master’s, senior, junior, etc.).

The priority registration opportunity occurs twice a year during the preregistration period for fall and spring semesters. Winter and summer sessions do not use a priority registration program. The opportunity to claim a student parent early registration enrollment appointment is available in the GET Student Center well in advance of preregistration for the next semester. The certification page is closed during the enrollment appointment development and preregistration weeks twice a year. The deadline for requesting a student parent early registration enrollment appointment is published on the Dates & Deadlines page each year.

Prior to the deadline for requesting a student parent early registration enrollment appointment you may use the following steps to submit a self-certification that you qualify for this benefit:

  1. Sign into GET via the MyCalStateLA portal.

  2. Click on the Student Center tile:
